H1N1 Guidelines from Bishop MacPherson

During this time of great concern about the H1N1 virus and precautions that should be taken by all of us, I offer the following basic public guidelines for the benefit of everyone.

In general
1. It is imperative to exercise due caution in general hygienic practices such as washing of hands, use of anti-bacterial sanitizers on the part of clergy, acolytes, lay Eucharistic ministers, and the congregation in general. Persons who have the flu, sore throats, coughs, etc. should be dissuaded from attending services until they are well.
2. It is recommended to have communicants receive by intinction at this time, and as noted below, the directive to NOT intinct their own bread is very important, and for people to be reminded that Communion in one kind only (i.e., bread) is a valid sacramental act.

Regarding Holy Eucharist
1. All lay Eucharistic ministers and clergy must wash their hands thoroughly with a hand sanitizer (anti-microbial rinse) just before beginning to administer Communion. This can be done discretely at the credence table during the preparation of the altar
2. All chalices and patens must be cleaned properly with soap and hot water and stored in sealed containers between use.
3. Purificators should be washed in hot water and stored in sealed containers.
4. If possible, with large attendance, purificators should be changed during the administration of Communion.
5. Lay Eucharistic ministers must exercise care and diligence when wiping the chalice to ensure that it is cleansed properly.
6. Intinction MUST be administered by the Priest/Deacon or Lay Eucharistic Minister ONLY and NOT by the communicant.

Other points
1. Having an anti-microbial rinse available for people in the Narthex is encouraged, and particularly in the Church school rooms and children's nursery.
2. If members of the congregation are not feeling well, they should be encouraged to stay home until they are well again.
3. All kitchen, restroom and nursery facilities should be thoroughly sanitized before and after services.
4. Everyone should wash their hands before and after each service and particularly after shaking hands. The understanding and cooperation of each of us is important during this period.

Thank you.
